Lacan was purposefully obscure so that his readers might work at the meaning and some may arrive at the right one. Maybe there's something to that. Ideas, after all, seldom translate directly into language. So to avoid the audience from attempting to interpret directly, we obfuscate, communicating that work is needed to understand.
